Small rocky outcrops: Natural features to promote biodiversity in oak wood‐pastures

چکیده

Aims The Iberian oak wood-pastures are unique agroforestry systems supporting high levels of biodiversity and ecosystem services. Small rocky outcrops geological features commonly found in these constitute reservoirs, protecting sensitive species from grazing farming activities. We aimed to assess the relevance including outcrop conservation within increase biodiversity. To achieve this goal, we study plant communities occurring wood-pasture matrix evaluate impact on overall taxonomic functional diversities systems. Location Montemor-o-Novo (Alentejo, Portugal). Methods sampled 102 adjacent analysed alpha, beta, gamma diversities. identified main intrinsic factors affecting composition their groups using Linear (LM) Generalised Mixed Models (GLMMs) characterised effect size throughout Additive (GAMs). Results richness be similar outcrops. However, beta diversity analysis revealed a turnover between both communities. Functional indices indicated higher trait analyses three dissimilarly distributed communities: i) perturbation stress-sensitive plants, with constituting an important refuge for group, ii) grazing-tolerant iii) weedy herbs dominating wood-pastures. Finally, also increased length minor axis, i.e. wider outcrops, rock cover area. Conclusions Our results indicate that presence small evergreen highly Consequently, protection strongly impacts underline suitability as cost-effective solution capable increasing

community-based preferences for economic incentives to promote biodiversity conservation in a tropical rainforest

this paper discusses the study of community’s preferences for biodiversity conservation management institution which may motivate them to support conservation efforts in the okwangwo division of the cross river national park, nigeria. the empirical data was generated from personal interviews and factors influencing the respondents’ choice were examined with the aid of multinomial logit mode...

Agroforestry Practices Promote Biodiversity and Natural Resource Diversity in Atlantic Nicaragua

Tropical forest conversion to pasture, which drives greenhouse gas emissions, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss, remains a pressing socio-ecological challenge. This problem has spurred increased interest in the potential of small-scale agroforestry systems to couple sustainable agriculture with biodiversity conservation, particularly in rapidly developing areas of the tropics. In addition...

Spatial variability in community composition on a granite breakwater versus natural rocky shores: lack of microhabitats suppresses intertidal biodiversity.

Strong differences have been observed between the assemblages on artificial reefs and on natural hard-bottom habitats worldwide, but little is known about the mechanisms that cause contrasting biodiversity patterns. We examined the influence of spatial attributes in relation to both biogenic and topographic microhabitats, in the distribution and composition of intertidal species on both artific...

Bacterial Biodiversity in Natural Environments

Increased accessibility to the technologies for high-throughput sequencing has revealed the diversity and dynamism of bacterial genomes. It is now known that variation in gene content between bacterial strains may encompass 30–35% of the genes in the genome. Because this genetic diversity and genome variability triggers the emergence of pathogens as well as novel metabolic capabilities in the n...

Whole-Community Facilitation Regulates Biodiversity on Patagonian Rocky Shores

BACKGROUND Understanding the factors that generate and maintain biodiversity is a central goal in ecology. While positive species interactions (i.e., facilitation) have historically been underemphasized in ecological research, they are increasingly recognized as playing important roles in the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity. Dominant habitat-forming species (foundation species) buffer...
